Classic (and even some modern) movie title screens are ripe with typographic inspiration. The title screen of the 1930’s film entitled, “Der Blaue Engel”, (or “The Blue Angel”) starring Marlene Dietrich fanned the flames for our Englebert Pro typeface.
While the full title/credits screen collection offers a range of influence, it was the main title screen that grabbed me as far as letter weight, as well as that sweet signature “g”. If you’d like to check out what those title screens look like, check them out at “The Movie Title Stills Collection”.
Looking back again at the inspiration while writing this, I realize that we really need to come around and revisit the rest of those title screens and make those other styles as well. Food for thought.
