Once again, vintage cigarette and tobacco advertising proves a valuable resource. This time, the all-capital letterforms from the deco posters of Hungarian artist Robert Berény for Modiano offered up the inspiration for our Righteous Pro typeface.
While the artist had created other deco posters which featured a similar letter styling using all lowercase letters, Righteous Pro was independently developed using solely the Capitals referenced in the original poster art seen above as the inspiration. Berény’s lowercase forms were a bit too heavy handed to compliment the capitals well (at least in my opinion).
For the most part, the M and A are the only two letters that set the original reference apart from so many other Sans-serif typefaces, and that is exactly for that reason why the lowercase took on a more stylized display design to set it apart even further.
